Since writing it, I've come up with a much shorter answer - after being exposed to information about how food effects our health and how toxic sugar is...I wanted to live long and strong and so made changes to how I eat.
That's the short answer. For those of you with a higher pain tolerance...onward...
It was a two-week cleansing utilizing raw foods and included daily classes on the body, digestion, food, meditation, and exercise. It was the first time in my life that I lived without sugar and it was amazing!
My energy levels soared. My mental acuity returned. I FELT great!
Working ridiculous hours at a boarding school didn't help me to sustain this way of eating and I soon fell back into my old habits, although with a much reduced amount of sugar.
Fast forward to the winter of 2013. I was on a ski trip with a good friend of mine, (Sam H's sister actually =p), and had trouble standing up from the beginner chair lift that doesn't let you off at an incline but goes flat.
"Trouble" actually means that I couldn't do it. I fell down and the Lift Operator had to came out and haul me to my feet. It was so humiliating.
I think I weighed about 230 then. I'm 6' so I could carry the weight but it was already taking a toll on my knees and my self confidence.
My friend gently advised me to lose some weight. She wasn't referring to how I looked but to how I would age. Her comments struck a chord with me and over the next few months I gave it a lot of thought, although not much action.
I don't remember how I found Dr. Mark Hyman's 10 Day Detox Diet but doing it changed my life. (No one is paying me to say that, by the way.)
Beginning April 1st, fool or not, I wanted to try going without sugar for 10 days. That decision has affected my life on a daily basis ever since.
